Concrete Garage Floors

Replacement and new-pour garage floor slabs, pitched to the door, reinforced, and thickened where vehicle loads land.

years in business

A garage floor is a slab-on-grade with two demands nothing else in the house has: it carries point loads from tires, and it sheds water that arrives frozen and full of road salt.

Most of the failed garage floors we replace in the western suburbs failed at the base rather than in the concrete. The original slab went down on poorly compacted fill, the fill settled, and the slab cracked into sections that now rock under a wheel. Coating a floor like that is money thrown at a symptom. We take it out, re-excavate, and compact CA-6 stone in lifts before anything gets poured.

What's included

  • Demolition and haul-away of the old slab
  • Excavation and compacted CA-6 stone base
  • Wire mesh or rebar reinforcement on chairs
  • Thickened edge at the overhead door
  • Four to six inch air-entrained pour
  • Expansion joint isolating the foundation walls

How the job goes

  1. Free estimate, thickness set to your vehicles
  2. Saw cut, demolish and remove old floor
  3. Excavate, base, compact, set steel
  4. Pour, finish, cut joints, cure

Garage Floors questions

How thick should a garage floor slab be?

Four inches over compacted stone is standard for cars and light trucks. Go to five or six with rebar for a dually, heavy RV or a lift, and thicken the edge at the door.

How much does a new garage floor cost?

Square footage, the thickness the slab needs, and the cost of breaking out and hauling the old floor away all matter. We measure the garage and quote it free in writing.

Should the garage floor slope toward the door?

Yes, about an eighth of an inch per foot. Without pitch, snowmelt and road salt sit at the back wall and soak into the slab and the framing plate.

Can a crumbling garage floor be repaired instead?

Surface spalling can be overlaid. Heaving, a slab broken into separate pieces, or one that has settled against the foundation is a base failure, and only replacement fixes those.
