Footings and piers are the part of a project nobody sees and the part that decides whether everything above stays where it was built. A footing spreads a concentrated load over enough soil area to carry it; a pier does the same with a deep shaft reaching past unstable surface material.
Depth is not negotiable here. The design frost depth across the Chicago suburbs is 42 inches, and any footing above it will be lifted every winter and dropped every spring. That cycle tips deck posts, cracks garage slabs and separates additions from the house.

Footings & Piers questions
How deep do footings need to be in Illinois?
The frost depth used across the Chicago suburbs is 42 inches, and most village codes require the bottom of the footing at or below it.
How much does a concrete pier cost?
Piers are priced each, and the diameter and depth decide it. A 12-inch deck pier is the simplest, while a large drilled and belled pier carrying an addition costs considerably more.
What is a belled pier?
A drilled pier with a flared base. The bell increases bearing area at the bottom without widening the whole shaft, which is how you carry a heavy column load on stiff clay.
Do footings need an inspection before the pour?
Yes, in every village we work in. The inspector checks depth, width, soil bearing and reinforcing steel. We schedule it and meet the inspector on site.
