Steps and sidewalks are the two pieces of concrete every visitor touches, and the two most likely to generate a liability claim. A settled panel with a one-inch lip, or a stoop that has pulled away from the door, is a trip waiting to happen, and in most suburbs the responsibility falls on the homeowner.
Riser layout is where step jobs go wrong. We measure the total rise from finished grade to the threshold, divide it into equal risers under 7.75 inches, and set treads at 10 inches or more. Equal risers are not cosmetic: an odd step at the top of a flight is the most common cause of falls.

Steps & Sidewalks questions
What are the code riser and tread dimensions for concrete steps in Illinois?
Most villages follow the residential code: risers no taller than 7.75 inches, treads at least 10 inches deep, and under 0.375 inch variation between risers in a flight.
How much do concrete steps cost?
Steps are priced by the number of risers and the size of the landing, and the quote covers demolition, a frost footing, and railing sleeves. We measure before pricing.
Who is responsible for the sidewalk in front of my house?
The walk usually sits in the village right-of-way but the adjoining owner is responsible for its condition. Many DuPage and Cook villages run 50/50 cost-share programs.
Can you replace just one cracked sidewalk square?
Yes. We saw-cut the panel at the joints, break it out, re-base and pour a matching square. Access and how many panels are done at once decide the price.
