Sealing is the cheapest maintenance you can do to concrete in this climate, and the one most homeowners skip until the surface has already started to flake.
The damage mechanism is simple. Road salt tracked off tires dissolves in snowmelt and soaks into the top layer of the slab. When it refreezes it expands and the paste pops off. That is spalling, and once it starts the only fix is an overlay. Washing matters as much as the sealer, because sealing over dirt or algae locks the stain in permanently, and stamped concrete needs a far lower pressure setting than a broom-finish driveway.

Washing & Sealing questions
How often should concrete be sealed in Illinois?
Every three to four years for a driveway that gets plowed and salted, and every two to three for stamped or colored concrete where the sealer also carries the color.
How much does it cost to seal a driveway?
Washing and sealing are quoted together, and the area plus how much staining has to come off first decides the number. We look at the drive and price it in writing, free.
Penetrating or film-forming sealer?
A penetrating silane-siloxane soaks in and looks natural, which suits broom-finish driveways. A film-forming acrylic adds wet-look gloss and is what stamped work needs to hold color.
When can new concrete be sealed?
Wait 28 days. Sealing green concrete traps moisture in the slab and the sealer clouds or peels. Decorative work gets a cure-and-seal at pour time instead.
